International Cooperative Program
Kimpo College has many international cooperative programs for the students
and faculty to experience globalization. The College has agreements
with many well-known universities overseas that facilitate student and
faculty exchange and joint research. The College established The International
Education Center in 2000 to promote international cooperative programs.
The College has also strived to broaden the dissemination of Korean
studies outside of Korea through the publications of books on Korean
Culture and other out-reach programs. The following programs are the
key building blocks of Kimpo College's enduring commitment to internationalized
education and research.
¢Ã Student Exchange
1. International summer and winter session:
A chance to study English or one's major at one of our sister schools
during summer and winter sessions. Many students have participated in
various kinds of programs which were held by our sister schools since
2000 such as CQU(Central Queensland University) International Music
Camp and ESL at CQU. Ms. Hwasook Woo, a student of music department,
said, "Joining the camp is one of the most valuable experiences
I have ever had in my life." As the students' interests are becoming
increasingly diverse, we are planning to send our students to sister
schools in the USA, Japan, and other areas. More and more students have
been able to broaden their academic and personal horizons through the
College's exchange program.
2. Job Experience at Kimpo College for the students
of sister schools:
Coordination of regular courses for foreign students at Kimpo College
in order for them to get practicial skills and abilities in the work
place. A Summer English Camp will be held at Kimpo College for the kids
living in the Kimpo area. Some of the eligible students of our sister
schools will be invited to have a job experience at Kimpo College. They
will have extensive work experience in their field of study.
¢Ã Faculty Exchange
This program is primarily to provide Kimpo College faculty with opportunities
to study and teach abroad. To give them an opportunity to develop their
academic and intellectual pursuits with a global persepective, various
kind of programs are offered.
1. Visiting program
While scholars from foreign institutions have visited Kimpo College
for exchange of ideas and research materials, faculty members of Kimpo
College have gone abroad to participate in various kinds of faculty
enrichment programs. Currently Professor Sangsik Kim, Director of the
Center for College-Industry Relations, conducts research at the University
of Baguio as a visiting professor.
2. Special Lecture Exchanges
During the summer vacation of 2001, professors Jungsuk Kim and Jaesaeng
Kim of Computer Science visited Yanbian University of Science and Technology
and gave special lectures.
3. Provision for opportunities to undertake joint
research and seminars on matters of mutual interest. In June, 2001,
William Gregory, Dean of College of Engineering and Applied Science,
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee visited Kimpo College to discuss joint
research activities between our two institutions. In November 2001,
Al Ghorbanpoor, Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and research of
the same institution visited our college to further our joint research
programs as well as to discuss exchange of faculty and students between
our two institutions.
¢Ã Transfer to Foreign Universities after graduation
For students who want to continue their studies and earn a degree, Kimpo
College has a number of linkages, transfer and articulation agreements
with other sister schools. Since 2000, a select number of our students
have transferred to our sister schools for the past 2 years. Transfer
to our sister schools is possible with credit transfer.
¢Ã International Cultural Exchange
1. Publications of the books on Korean culture
For the purpose of introducing Korean culture overseas and promoting
international cultural exchanges, 10 volumes in the 'Korean Culture
Series' under titles such as Humor in Korean Literature, Upper-class
Culture in the Chosun Dynasty, Folk Culture in Korea, The King's Secret
Emissary in the Chosun Dynasty and so on has been published. In addition
to this, these books have been translated in English and distributed
free of cost to the libraries of prodigious academic bodies that do
research on Korean studies overseas.
2. Provision for opportunities to undertake Theme
Trip
As the students' interests are becoming increasingly diverse and cosmopolitan,
a lot of diverse programs are designed to satisfy their needs. Students
were attracted to backpack trips to Europe the most. Hyejin Shin of
Electrical Engineering expressed her satisfaction, "Thank our college
for giving me a great chance to experience a new culture and broaden
my perspective. I strongly recommend this trip to my friends."
